The theme you downloaded is meant to be used on a self-hosted WordPress installation. Meaning you will have installed the WordPress software from WordPress.ORG onto your own web server. Then you can upload the theme and use it on your own installation.
But you currently have a WordPress.COM blog. Meaning you are using their hosting and their WordPress installation. It has a lot more limitations than a self-hosted WordPress blog. You can browse themes on WordPress.com and use what you find. But you can’t go elsewhere on the web and find themes, such as the one you linked to, and “upload” it to a WordPress.COM blog.

Question by DM J: How to use downloaded WordPress theme…NOT hosted!?
Hey, can I use a downloaded WordPress theme on a blog I made but am not hosting? What I mean is, I’m just designing the blog via WORDPRESS.COM, and not uploading to my own server. How can I use a theme other than the free ones already offered in the DESIGN tab? Thanks.
Thanks, John…but I’m not hosting the blog, I’m using the FREE hosted on WORDPRESS.COM. Thanks.

You can add a new theme by putting it in the wp-content/themes folder. You can copy one of the exisiting templates and modify it by changing the name and adding it to the templates folder, or you can download additional templates from WordPress. Once they are in the templates folder, they will show up in the Design area.
I customized a WordPress theme to look like the rest of my website. You can see it at http://www.discwritecd.com/blog/index.php

Are you using WordPress.com? It does seem like the answer would be no to both. You can’t even add a plugin on your own. If your willing to make a better WordPress blog I would recommend on hosting!

Answer by Renaissance Web Designs
First, you’ll want to unzip the downloaded theme file.
Once this is done, you will want to connect to your server and upload the unzipped theme file to the /wp-content/themes/ folder within your blog directory.
After you’ve uploaded your new theme, you can switch your blog to the new theme by logging into the administration panel and clicking on “Appearance”. You should see your new theme in the list on this page, so to activate it simply click on the “Activate” link and you should be all set.
Hope this helps!
